Why Institutions Continue to Develop the Labradoodle Breed
The cute term Labradoodle is the name of one of the latest breed to have been conceived and developed in the 21st century. The first appearance of this breed was in Australia in the year of 1988 or 1989 and today, after just 2 decades, the Labradoodle is one of the favorite dogs of many around the world. The perfection and stability of this breed is being sought continually and so experimental breeding are on going to this day.
Wally Conron was the first person to breed the Labradoodle and he did so with an aim of developing a dog that is intelligent to carry out and obey instructions and hypoallergenic enough to be safe with every kind of person. This idea was brought on by a woman in Hawaii who requested to be given such quality of a dog for she is blind and her husband is allergic to dog hair and dander. After a few samples of hair and saliva were sent to Hawaii for testing, none of it returned with successful results.
Wally Conron’s innovative idea of combining a Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle was approved and supported by the Australian Guide Dog Association. The first cross-breeding resulted in three puppies and these tiny creaturess saliva and hair samples were immediately tested in Hawaii. At last one of the puppies’ samples produced successful results and this instigated the further breeding of the Labradoodle.
The Labradoodle is a new breed and not quite stable yet and so you will realize a varying temperament to each dog of this breed. Whatever the temperament of each dog is, however, it is sure to be an apparent result of the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle breeding. The continued breeding resulted in a varying generation of Labradoodle such as the Double Doodles, Tri Doodles, and the current Australian Multi-Generational Labradoodle.
The popular Labradoodles of today are generally friendly, full of energy and are great with families especially children. Individual Labradoodles may have different traits, however, the majority of its population displays a predisposition to water and has a strong swimming ability in support to both parents being talented swimmers. Whatever each dog’s temperament are, you can be sure that each combination or distinct traits are found in either the Labrador Retriever or the Standard Poodle.
The Labrador Retriever and the Standard Poodle are well-known for their above average intelligence and trainability and these are two of the exact traits that make the Labradoodle favorable to a lot of people. It is impressive to learn as well that the Labradoodle is quite adept in learning, understanding and obeying verbal and sign language commands. Because of this, the breed is widely used as a companion and guide of the disabled and handicapped people in the world.
The appearance of the Labradoodle vary in sizes as there are toy Labradoodles, miniature Labradoodles and standard Labradoodles; and these are brought about by the different sizes of the poodles used in cross-breeding. The coat varies in texture and type too as there is wiry or soft, straight, wavy or curly and coarse. The coats also appear in a selection of colors such as chocolate, cafe, parchment, cream, gold, apricot, red, black, silver, and chalk.
Because of the varying temperament and the growing popularity of the Labradoodle, the need to establish a concrete standard on this breed was realized. In view of this, two breeding and research centers for Labradoodle had been founded in Australia namely the Rutland Manor Labradoodle Breeding and Research Center in Darnum, Victoria and the Tegan Park Breeding and Research Center in Seaspray, Victoria. Both institutions test and qualify healthy and stable Labradoodles but it was the latter that introduced the Miniature Labradoodle.
