Almost everybody that has ever had a dog has forfited up some socks, slippers or the corner of their favorite chair to the chewing routine of their friendly canine. Even though your question is “how do I halt my dog from chewing” it should really be “how can I redirect the chewing pattern of my dog”.
You’re not going too entirel halt your pets chewing. Dogs just have to chew.
Since your pet needs to chew, give him some choices.
Start gathering up multiple types of chew toys that you can provide him with. Be sure that you put as many different items as you can in the areas that he spends most of his time. This should speed things along and help to keep your pet from gnawing on the expensive items.
Look the toys over every once in awhile and toss the ones that are wearing out. Try all kinds of toys until your dog finds the ones that he really loves the most.
Screaming and hollering when your dog is chewing on something he shouldn’t be is very unlikely going to cure the problem. Positive reinforcement that’s the way to go.
When your pet is just about to gnaw on anything he shouldn’t firmly give the no command and give him a chew toy. Whenever you see your dog grab her own chew toy instead of something else, give her some praise.
There are also a few ways to make the chewing unpleasant for your dog.
You can try what is known as the scat mat. Place the mats where you do not want your dog to go. Don’t worry the scat mat is basically harmless.
Another way to go would be to apply a bad tasting formula or bitters onto the object that you don’t want your pet chewing on. Your local pet store may have these things. While the above options may not be all that great it is another way to go.
Remember, dogs are going to chew, just try to direct the chewing towards the proper objects.
