The Shih Tzu is an independent dog which is intelligent, dignified, lovable, affectionate, sociable, and cheerful. It is not as outgoing as most breeds. Shih Tzu seldom barks, but did you know it was initially bred to look like a lion?

The Shih Tzus history is long and distinguished which gives way to its stately attitude. The Shih Tzu is one of the oldest breeds of dog which is proven by recent DNA testing. Its name comes from Xi Shi, who was regarded as one the most gorgeous women in ancient China.

The “palace dogs” where breed by Buddhist Monks for many emperors in ancient China. They made it their tradition to send Shih Tzu’s to the Empress of the Manchu Dynasty because she fell in love with these adorable dogs and made them common place in her palace.

From the middle of the 19th Century the Shih Tzu was bred as a watchdog for the emperors of the Manchu Dynasty. Characteristic of a Shih Tzu; these little dogs were likely to do little else than sit on laps and be pampered. The Shih Tzu was kept next to some other toy dog breeds and while at first they were strictly bred in separate areas, but it is suggested that after the empress died they were crossbred with the other dogs.

The Shih Tzu’s were not kept apart from the other palace dogs and today’s Shih Tzu’s have traces of Pekingese and Pugs thanks to the careless breeding practices at the palace.

A Shih Tzu puppy will be happy with daily exercise such as walks or fetch in the yard. They do not regulate their temperature as well as other breeds so you should not leave them out in the heat for extended periods of time.

The Shih Tzu is well suited to any lifestyle. Today’s Shih Tzu’s are a popular breed which is widely loved and make a great faithful companion.
