Prevent Your Dog From Barking Too Much

Most all dogs bark at times. It is their chief mode of communication but when a dog barks excessively it is annoying for everyone. Some breeds bark more than others but all dogs bark at times.

There are usually a few reasons why a dog will bark excessively. One of the first reasons why a dog barks is because he is bored. Dogs are pack animals, they love daily exercise, interacting with others and social stimulation. If they are spending most of their time being cooped up in the house or even outdoors in the same yard everyday they may need more fun. Try taking your dog for walks around the block or institute some structured playtime every day. This may help to keep your dog from excessive barking if he barks out of boredom.

Dogs often bark when they are nervous or scared. Some dogs never get properly socialized and therefore the slightest thing can frighten them. While you are training your dog take him to many different places and have him be around many people. Reward him when he is quiet and well behaved. A food treat will do wonders to keep him calm in different places and different situations. Soon he will start associating being quiet and well behaved with the treat and this will work amazingly well towards his excessive barking under these conditions.

Dogs often bark to get your attention and this is one way to communicate. However, if you respond to barking every time you are just teaching your dog to bark more. Attempt to get him to communicate in different ways and reinforce that behavior with praise and treats. He can rub on your leg if he wants to go out just as easy as he can bark at you!

Separation anxiety can cause a dog to start barking excessively. This is a difficulty for you as it is disturbing to neighbors and others and you are not even there. Try to get your dog over separation anxiety early on in his training when he is just a puppy. You can crate him whenever you leave and he will adjust to you being gone in his own space. Never make a big deal out of leaving your dog home alone but just slip out quietly. He will be less likely to act out until you get back if he doesn’t really know that you have left.

Dogs bark to protect you and there are situations when we all would appreciate that. However, every single day when the mailman or mail person! comes to deliver the mail is not one of those times! This is asituation when socialization and training can really pay off. Go with your dog to meet the mailman, let them become acquainted and hopefully your dog will stop barking at him everyday. Another way to get him to stop barking at inappropriate times is to distract him with a game or a treat. But in the case of your dog barking to protect you remind yourself that there may come a situation when you will appreciate that so limit your training to people you know.

A professional dog trainer can give you some tips and techniques to curb excessive barking but oftentimes just more socialization and more playtimes will curb the excessive barking. The one thing you should consider though is that your dog is usually barking for a reason and you should find out what that reason is. Then you can deal with the barking.

Dogs who only bark at proper times are much less frustrating than dogs that bark excessively. Start training your dog away from excessive barking when he is still a pup and when he is all grown up you will know when he barks that there is a good reason.
